“My aim is to take listeners on a journey of love and redemption. Hymns that hope to convey and encourage humanity to focus on what really matters in life: love and truth. Power of love over love of power." - Azalia Snail
"At its most beautifully gauzy, [Snail’s music] plays like an extended hang-glide over canyons of warm, gooey, dreamy good feelings
." - Raymond Cummings (Splice Today)
“Azalia Snail has heroic status in the eyes of the Elephant 6. She is a singular creative influence on us, our scene, and our generation.” - Robert Schneider (Apples in Stereo/Elephant 6 Recording Co.)
POWERLOVER is the 15th solo album by American avant-garde musician, Azalia Snail. It’s an all instrumental album described by Snail as “an ode to Brian Eno’s ambient soundscapes.” The album features Azalia Snail on Omnichords, drums, synths, and effects; Dan West on bass (and piano on “Expert Outlier”) and Alan Sparhawk (LOW) contributing guitar to “Zap You of That Hate.” It was composed during the COVID-19 pandemic, and subsequently recorded at Studio Red with Adam Lasus (Helium, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Yo La Tengo) and mixed by Azalia Snail.
Snail describes the album’s creation as follows: “I was confronted and confounded by feelings of deep distress about the uneasy state of the world and the ever present impending doom. The songs are pleas for humanity to be kinder. My pieces begin with a simple yet determined riff, and build tension as they turn into layered, transcendent hymns. The album takes a more uplifting, hopeful tone as it goes on.”
POWERLOVER will be released on April 5, 2024 on Cloud Recordings (Circulatory System, Tall Dwarfs, New Sound of Numbers.)
