cult of riggonia
Cult of Riggonia is a psychedelic collective from Macon, GA. There are waves of texture with catchy melodies that rise up from the primordial stew. The sound hints of Captain Beefheart and The Magic Band, Animal Collective, Gong, and African music. Their live show is a full-on sensory experience with video projections, costumes, and stuffed animals. There are whoops and hollers, and they chant together in a language of their own construction. The drummer has a spastic high energy style that relates more to free jazz than ordinary pop music. The things he does with a drumstick in one hand, while working a sampler with the other are truly mind blowing. The collective has released tons of stream of consciousness material on their bandcamp page, but Nematode Rodriguez Presents... is their most fully realized output to date. They are all hard working and dedicated musicians, and one of them even runs a record shop in Macon called Fresh Produce Records.
"Cult of Riggonia could really be from another time, or another planet. There are snippets of ancient Aztec worlds mixed with remote Appalachian villages, mingling with a lost order of monks, feeding through a Martian amplifier. And somehow it is all still pleasing to the ear. We recommend open minds, eyes and ears for this one."- The 11th Hour
"So much of Cult of Riggonia's personality shines in their live performances...[T]he band often ties stalks of bok choy and celery to their mic stands. Some kind of weird animal mascot always makes an appearance. Their dress usually consists of silk robes and African dashikis...[M]ost importantly, and this is what shines through in their recorded takes, is their enthusiasm for their tribal blend of psychedelic/experimental musings. On stage, vocals are shouted over the chaotic din as members, translate the frenzy into an excess of kinetic limbs and dance..." - Ampersand Magazine
